Open Letter to Lawmakers

       This is the eighteenth school shooting of 2018, the eighteenth in a mere forty-five days.*

       Do not tell us how your thoughts and prayers are going out to the victims and families of today’s shooting in Florida. Do not tell us now is not the time to discuss gun control. Now, while feelings are raw and we have in out hearts and minds the awareness that lives have been lost and other lives ruined, while we know that parents, siblings, extended families, and friends will NEVER get over this sickening massacre, NOW is the time to press for gun control, to eschew blaming  mental health issues, to avoid blaming random evil. NOW is the time to pass legislation banning assault rifles and automatic weapons, to limit the number of weapons anyone may own, to close all loopholes, to mandate extensive background checks in all transactions, to require waiting periods for all purchases. NOW is the time to screw your courage to the sticking place and buck party politics and pass legislation to reduce gun violence and keep our children safe.

        The only reason to say that NOW is not the time is if you are brave enough to admit that the time to deal with our gun problem was many years ago. We didn’t do it then. Do it NOW!
